Just a Question...

Well I was surfing Bebo the other day I happened across Romanas page and saw that she had that application called 'Collect Rice' now as far as I know all the prices of food and such are rising because there is a shortage of these staple foods such as rice so therefore my question is:

If the rice shortage is as bad as it seems then things like http://www.freerice.com/ (which is a brilliant site!) and the 'Collect Rice' are we making it worse or will these sites be outta busniess soon as rice gets too expense?

Sorry if the answer is painfully obvious and I'm just not up with the play....

I can't be arsed doing any research, so this may be all wrong, but there is no way that free rice is adding to any food crisis. All the rice donated goes into the World programme, which pretty much means that starving people are getting it for free rather than at an inflated price.

Secondly, the food crisis has definitely lessened in the last couple of months. My perception of it being so is probably mostly because it is no longer an issue at the forefront of the media's minds, but it stands to reason that the greatly reduced price of oil would lower the cost of food. Cheaper transport costs mean cheaper food, and the halting of many biofuel projects as a result of cheap oil (and thus less public demand for alternatives), and the global recession. More food is available for consumption because of this.

I have other issues with Free Rice tough (not saying that it is not, indeed, a wonderful thing). The ads that keep it running used to be from (evil) corporations, like iTunes. This was amazing - companies got to both donate money they otherwise wouldn't to charity. Charities themselves got wind of the project too, however, and now make up most of the advertising. I don't agree with this. Sure, it might mean some people visit these websites, and make additional donations, but it also means essentially that charities are sponsoring charities, as opposed to companies with deep pockets. Personally, i would think it was in everyone's best interest to have new money flowing into places like the World Food programme, as opposed to money that was going to go to charity anyway.

Sorry for the tangent. Hope i helped answer your question
