Even though i'm not there, even if i have nothing there, it really disturbs me. like war should.
It would be greatly appreaciated if someone told me how it became this way, i'm still in a daze...

Thanks for posting about this Jo, it's obviously a hugely important human rights issue at the moment, and I think honestly we are all a bit dazed by it, and a time when we should be celebrating the new year and were looking foward to new beginnings with the Obama presidency only to have this huge step backwards in Israeli-Palestinian relations.
I'm still trying to get a handle on the situation myself, I might actually do a blogpost on the subject to address it, but essentially the truce between the Israeli Government and HAMAS (the governing body of the Gaza strip) ended last week and HAMAS launched a series of missiles at Israel (which I think has killed one civilian?), which is obviously a completely reprehensible action but Israel has responded in a completely disproportionately way, by air-bombing the gaza strip, which is one of the most densely populated strips of land in the world, and so far 400 people have died and countless more injured, and the hospitals have only 2000 beds.
That's most basic explanation, however I think the best way of staying informed is just to keep up with the news- newspapers, google news, tv, anything, because there will be new developments happening all the time and you'll be able to piece together a more comprehensive grasp of the situation.
I'm watching the news right now and it's showing protests of thousands of people all over the world, which gives me hope. If you're in Wellington (unfortunately I'm out of town), try and see if there are protests happening that you can go to.
Happy New Year to the AC from me too, unfortunately it's not looking very happy so far.
